Gurupurnima in all Amrita Vidyalayam schools are celebrated with Mathrupuja – the formal worship of mother as God. In Amrita Vidyalayam, Changanassery, Bri. Nishtamirta Chaithanya, the in-charge of the local M.A.Math inaugurated the function by lighting the traditional oil lamp. The students did Mathrupuja, the worship of their biological mothers under the guidance of Bri. Nishtamritaji. The students washed the feet of their mothers, anointed them with sandal paste and kumkum, put garland and did arathi. The mothers’ in their turn blessed their kids by hugging and kissing them and by putting sweets in their mouths. The function inculcated in all the participants, the age old saying ‘Mata Pita Guru Daivam’ i.e., one’s mother, father and guru are equal to God.
