Amrita Vidyalayam - Thiruvananthapuram
'Beyond Education'

Located at the capital of the state, Amrita Vidyalayam Trivandrum is one of the prominent schools in the Amrita chain. A senior school in the Amrita group, AV Trivandrum has proved its mettle through the years. Stiff competition and increasing demand for admission reflect the amount of faith and confidence the school has gained among the people in the area.

Located in serene surroundings just a stone’s throw from Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Trivandrum, the school has a perceptible calm around it.

Modern in teaching methods and traditional in the values imparted, the school imparts to the children cultural values and a strong academic education. The school has adopted a computer aided learning technology, ‘Balavidya’ in which the students get to virtually ‘do’ and test the concepts they learn in the class. The last academic year has seen drastic improvement in the performance of the students after the use of this software.

For the kindergarten section, a language lab has been installed. Here the young ones hear the words in English and are required to repeat the word with the same articulation. The software is so designed that it does not advance until the child gets the pronunciation right. It has proved to be indispensable in ironing out the local accents that the children may have learned. Fully equipped computer and science labs and a library with a vast collection of relevant books leave the kids with no want of aids to learning.

Thiruvadharakali....   Foul, foul, foul!!!

Indian values and culture have a important role to play in Amrita. Children are taught the ‘Bhagavad Gita’ as they advance through the classes. Daily prayers have been selected which take into account the significance of each day of the week. So along with each prayer, the child effortlessly learns what each day stands for. The children also learn Yoga and Meditation as they learn Math and Science. In addition, the children have the liberty of choosing from a variety of arts like music, dance, marital arts, painting and others.

King Mahabali visits AV - Trivandrum

The staff and students of AV Trivandrum celebrated Onam this year complete with the floral carpets and the kaikottikali. The best part of the function was that it was organized and conducted by the students themselves. It was a bit of a event management exercise wherein the school representatives along with the class prefects, planned and executed the function. The representatives created committees and tasks for them which they had to be fulfilled by members of the committees.

Welcoming His Highness,
King Mahabali....
  Waah! I am scared, Ma’am....

A student took on the role of King Mahabali. The King was received with royal honors by the students who escorted him from the entrance of the school. The king was next taken on a tour of the school with an entourage, that catered to His Highness' needs from time to time. King Mahabali visited each and every class, enquiring if his subjects well being.

One memorable occasion occurred as the King entered a kindergarten class. The tiny tots seeing th King complete with the crown, moustache and umbrella, were scared out of their wits and started crying and wailing together. Much to the amusement of the onlookers, the teachers, try as might, could not calm down or make the little ones understand. It was not until the teacher banished the ‘demon’ from the class that the kids stopped their furor!

Once the King had satisfied himself with the tour the day proceeded on to the special Onam games and events organized. The first was the tug of war with children of the same age group forming opponent teams. It was a real treat to watch with the classmates of the participants all fired up, cheering for their teams.

Pull, Pull, Pull....

The next was a novel game wherein each player was blindfolded and was required to put a tilak at the right spot on a painting. The catch was that the child after being blindfolded, would be made to go in circles before their attempt, so that they completely lost their bearing! This game gave rise to peals of laughter as some disoriented children applied tilaks to the walls and pillars of the room.

Of course there were the pookalams—floral carpets. Each class created a pookalam and the best among them were awarded prizes. The girls were the bosses here, drawing and creating the flower spreads, while the boys assisted the girls in getting the different colors and varieties of flowers. The spirit of the children was too much to resist, so that the staff also set out making their own design and submitted it for the event!

The staff with their entry....   Pookalam as colorful as themselves! the kindergarten entry....

Last were the cultural programs. Mohini Attam, Kaikottikali, Bharatnatyam, Thiruvathirakali and the like captivated the audience. It was a day filled with work and enjoyment for the students, who though exhausted after the day’s excitements, were found asking, "When is the next Onam???"

Adding finishing touches....
